Caracas
Caracas is the capital of Venezuela, the country that represents the new 21st century socialism in Latin America. The city used to be a model of modernism for Latin America, however Caracas has experienced a notable transformation over the last eight years. I returned in January and November 2006 and I found a completely different city from where I grew up. While my past work has tended to focus on people rather than landscapes or architecture, when I saw Caracas I felt the need to approach the city as if it where a person and do portraits of her in this new stage. These photographs are for display with a series of audio recordings that I made in Venezuela from speeches of President Hugo Chávez and other sounds in the city.
